CEI Material’s General Contractor Spotlight: Clark Construction

With over a century in the construction business, Clark expanded from a small local excavator to a nationally trusted and operated brand. With over 4,000 employees, the company operates from Maryland to Seattle, Washington. Their expansive portfolio includes well-known projects around the country and the team has been awarded over 1,000 regional and national awards. The Rixey, a 15-story, 265-unit residential high-rise, was named after Admiral Presley M. Rixey, the famous personal physician of past American presidents. The LEED Gold project also features retail space, adapting to the competitive mixed-use residential marketplace in Arlington, Virginia.

Project Manager at CEI Materials, Garrett Harris describes the importance of the fabricator-general contractor relationship explaining, “Accessing the fascia panels on the trellis was a challenge faced during installation. With tight site access and no access to the area via swing stage, it took planning and coordination between the general contractors at Clark Construction and various other trades to access the area.”

Another mixed-use residential space collaboration with Clark was Verde Pointe in Arlington. “This project was one of the first we completed with Clark Construction, who toured our facility in Michigan and felt confident in our ability to handle the project. It would result in a long-standing relationship with Clark, having completed numerous projects together to date, “CEI Materials CEO Jeff Henry describes. The project utilizes over 30,000 square-feet of fire-rated metal components fabricated at CEI.

One of our larger collaborative projects was the Pearl in Silver Spring, Maryland. The primary phase of the redevelopment was awarded LEED Gold certification and is a beautiful example of shared wall space, utilizing a variety of exterior cladding materials. CEI Materials worked closely with the general contractors at Clark Construction Group to fabricate the building’s Reynobond and Alucoil metal components.

In order to address direct site issues, Garrett Harris explains, “On the installation side, we worked within a tight schedule and site access, not to mention that about 90% of the work was installed off a swing stage not a boom lift, making installation even more difficult.”

The relationship between the fabricator and general contractor is essential. The general contractor serves as the project’s manager, facilitating the needs of the job from concept to completion. A good general contractor allows seamless relationships between the architect, fabricator, installer and other subcontractors. It’s no wonder Clark has been an integral part of the construction market for over 100 years. We at CEI Materials look forward to further collaborative efforts.
